I saw Hurray for the Riff Raff On Wednesday night (25th May) at the Old Queen’s Head in Islington.

The band’s singer/song writer, Alynda Lee Segarra sang beautifully, reminding me slightly of Catherine Irwin from Freakwater and Jolie Holland.

She was backed by a fine fiddle player, Yosi Perlstein. Aylanda herself played guitar and later a banjo.

The highlight of the set for me was the song ‘Too Much of a Good Thing’ and the poignant ‘Sali’s Song’, written about her friend Sali Grace who was brutally murdered in 2008.

Here’s a clip of the band playing ‘Too Much of a Good Thing’ in 2009.

You can also hear an interview with the band recorded yesterday.

  1. I thought you might like it Tim. I have to say, I feel a little weepy each time I hear the song ‘Too much’, which is a a good thing I think ; )
