Pereyaslavska<\/h3>\n

As far as I can tell, Pereyaslavska is named after the Pereyaslav Council which, according to Wikipedia<\/a>\u00a0was:<\/p>\n

“an official meeting that convened for (a) ceremonial pledge of allegiance by Cossacks to the Tsar of Muscovy in the town of Pereyaslav (now Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi in central Ukraine) in January 1654.”<\/p>\n

My knowledge of medieval east European history is a little foggy but the above doesn’t sound particularly good for Ukrainian national aspirations, so why the street name?<\/p>\n

More recently (2018) the street was in the news for road works that have (quite understandably) upset the residents. “It is impossible to go outside” complained one local.<\/p>\n

Steingasse<\/h3>\n

The street’s older name hides a darker history as it marks one of the boundaries of the ghetto that 50,000 Jews were forced to move to in October 1941.<\/p>\n
