{"id":7755,"date":"2019-01-02T17:12:24","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T17:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=7755"},"modified":"2019-01-02T19:21:54","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T19:21:54","slug":"my-favourite-books-of-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2019\/01\/my-favourite-books-of-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"My favourite books of 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to my<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/review\/list\/252637-martinxo?shelf=2018\"> Goodreads list<\/a> I devoured 50 books last year and abandoned three.\u00a0 Of these fifty, 24 were were non-fiction.<\/p>\n<p>I moved steadily away from e-books and purchased either via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toppingbooks.co.uk\/\">Toppings<\/a>, my excellent local bookshop, Ebay (a veritable buyers market these days) or various charity and second hand bookshops.<\/p>\n<p>In the last quarter of the year I discovered that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\">archive.org<\/a> hosts a frightening number of interesting looking books available for loan. I also took out a subscription to the wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/foxedquarterly.com\/\">Slightly Foxed quarterly<\/a> which has furnished yet more books for my &#8216;to-read&#8217; list.<\/p>\n<p>This year has been dominated by central and eastern Europe as will quickly become evident from a glance at the list below.\u00a0 I expect this trend to continue throughout 2019.<\/p>\n<h2>Top five novels<\/h2>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7762\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/lifeandfate.jpg\" alt=\"Life and Fate\" width=\"103\" height=\"225\" \/>Life and Fate &#8211; Vasily Grossman<\/h3>\n<p>An astonishing work encompassing the Second World War, Stalingrad, Stalin&#8217;s purges and the people swept up in this most awful period of the twentieth century.\u00a0 The writing isn&#8217;t always beautiful (Grossman was primarily a journalist) but its power and breadth is breathtaking.\u00a0 A long, and not always easy read, but well worth your time.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7767 \" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/wharton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"108\" height=\"179\" \/>The House of Mirth &#8211; Edith Wharton<\/h3>\n<p>Published in 1905, the novel tells the story of\u00a0Lily Bart and her life as a member of New York City&#8217;s high society.\u00a0 The book is as an attack on the\u00a0hypocrisy of the American\u00a0upper class and the restricted roles assigned to woman in society at that time.\u00a0 Wharton writes beautifully.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7769 \" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/roth.jpg\" alt=\"roth\" width=\"113\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/roth.jpg 200w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/roth-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/roth-116x180.jpg 116w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/>The Radetzky March &#8211; Joseph Roth<\/h3>\n<p>Roth charts the decline and fall of the Hapsburg empire through the life of three generations of the\u00a0Trotta family.\u00a0 A magnificent book that helped ignite my interest in Austro-Hungary and the Dual Monarchy.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7770 \" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/counted.jpeg\" alt=\"counted\" width=\"123\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/counted.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/counted-192x300.jpeg 192w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/counted-115x180.jpeg 115w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 123px) 100vw, 123px\" \/><br \/>\nThey Were Counted &#8211; B\u00e1nffy, Mikl\u00f3s<\/h3>\n<p>A sumptuous feast of a book. 600 pages (the first in a series of three books) set at the turn of last century following the lives of two young men in (what was then) the Transylvanian region of Hungary. I&#8217;m hungry for the next two in the series (pardon the pun).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7787 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/trans.jpeg\" alt=\"They were counted\" width=\"180\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/trans.jpeg 302w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/trans-186x300.jpeg 186w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/trans-300x485.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/trans-250x404.jpeg 250w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/trans-111x180.jpeg 111w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The only downside is the book&#8217;s cover which I really dislike, the typeface is quite ugly.<\/p>\n<p>Compare the above to this alternative version of the cover which is understated, clean and pleasing to the eye.<\/p>\n<p>These things matter to me, book covers (just like album covers back in the day) are one of the joys of reading real books as opposed to e-books.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7768 \" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/salter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/salter.jpg 200w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/salter-190x300.jpg 190w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/salter-114x180.jpg 114w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/>Light Years &#8211; James Salter<\/h3>\n<p>Oh, James Salter writes so beautifully and this book is dreamy, so many perfect phrases and no padding at all, a fine novel.<\/p>\n<p>I also read a collection of his short stories which were not so hot and the dog chewed the cover off.<\/p>\n<h2>I also enjoyed<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Sentimental Tales &#8211; Mikhail Zoshchenko<\/li>\n<li>Death of a Dissident &#8211; Stuart M.Kaminsky<\/li>\n<li>Kolymsky Heights &#8211; Lionel Davidson<\/li>\n<li>She Knew She Was Right &#8211; Ivy Litvinov<\/li>\n<li>Crabwalk &#8211; G\u00fcnter Grass<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Top five non-fiction<\/h2>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7773 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/From-Odessa-to-Jerusalem-Leon-Majaro.jpg\" alt=\"From Odessa to Jerusalem Leon Majaro\" width=\"113\" height=\"149\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>From Odessa to Jerusalem &#8211; Leon Majaro<\/h3>\n<p>This thrilling book tells the story of Leon Majaro from Odessa. Born into a middle class Jewish family, Majaro witnessed the Russo-Japanese war and pogroms against the Jewish community in Odessa. He fought on the Turkish front with the Russian army during the first world war before making his way to Jerusalem where he finally settled.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7772 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/No-Im-Not-Afraid-by-Irina-Ratushinskaya.jpg\" alt=\"No, I'm Not Afraid by Irina Ratushinskaya\" width=\"113\" height=\"178\" \/>No, I&#8217;m Not Afraid &#8211; Irina Ratushinskaya<\/h3>\n<p>A harrowing account of the suppression and imprisonment of the Ukrainian poet,\u00a0Irina Ratushinskaya, by the Soviet regime in the 70s and 80s.<\/p>\n<p>Her crime?\u00a0 Writing poetry.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7775 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/The-Battle-that-Shook-Europe-Poltava-and-the-Birth-of-the-Russian-Empire-by-Peter-Englund.jpg\" alt=\"The Battle that Shook Europe Poltava and the Birth of the Russian Empire by Peter Englund\" width=\"113\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/The-Battle-that-Shook-Europe-Poltava-and-the-Birth-of-the-Russian-Empire-by-Peter-Englund.jpg 113w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/The-Battle-that-Shook-Europe-Poltava-and-the-Birth-of-the-Russian-Empire-by-Peter-Englund-112x180.jpg 112w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/>The Battle that Shook Europe: Poltava and the Birth of the Russian Empire &#8211; Peter Englund<\/h3>\n<p>I took this with me on <a href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2018-road-east\/\">my journey to eastern Ukraine<\/a> last September and read it while sipping beer in the fine city of Poltava.\u00a0 An excellent read from start to finish, Peter Englund writes in a very engaging style, bringing this important and decisive battle to life.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7776 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Russian-Hussar-A-Story-of-the-Imperial-Cavalry-1911-1920-Vladimir-S.-Littauer.jpg\" alt=\"Russian Hussar A Story of the Imperial Cavalry 1911-1920 - Vladimir S. Littauer\" width=\"113\" height=\"169\" \/><br \/>\nRussian Hussar: A Story of the Imperial Cavalry, 1911-1920 &#8211; Vladimir S. Littauer<\/h3>\n<p>Vladimir Littauer served in the Russian Imperial Cavalry from 1911 to 1920.
