{"id":75,"date":"2017-10-26T06:29:19","date_gmt":"2017-10-26T06:29:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ukrainistatemp.martinblack.com\/?p=75"},"modified":"2018-03-03T18:01:39","modified_gmt":"2018-03-03T18:01:39","slug":"on-nikolaevskaya-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2017\/10\/on-nikolaevskaya-street\/","title":{"rendered":"On Nikolaevskaya street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"drop1\">S<\/span>o I found an old photo of a street in central Kyiv by the name of Nikolaevskaya. \u00a0The picture (from the\u00a0Library of Congress website) was taken sometime between 1890 and 1900. \u00a0I think it&#8217;s safe to assume that the word Nikolaevskaya has something to do with Saint Nicholas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76\" style=\"width: 506px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-76\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nicolviewskaia-kyiv-pic.jpg\" alt=\"Nikolaevskaya, back in the day\" width=\"506\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nicolviewskaia-kyiv-pic.jpg 506w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nicolviewskaia-kyiv-pic-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nikolaevskaya, back in the day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A few decades later, sometime during or after 1921, the street was renamed &#8216;Karla Marksa&#8217; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Given the street&#8217;s proximity to the centre of town, it was the scene of barricades during the Maidan.<\/p>\n<p>To bring us back to where we started, I found a \u00a0few mentions of\u00a0Nikolaevskaya street by searching Google Books. \u00a0It makes an appearance in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_White_Guard\">Bulgakov&#8217;s &#8216;The White Guard&#8217;<\/a> (note to self: take a copy to read in Kyiv)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6668\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Mikhail-Afanasevich-Bulgakov.png\" alt=\"Mikhail Afanasevich Bulgakov,\" width=\"636\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Mikhail-Afanasevich-Bulgakov.png 636w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Mikhail-Afanasevich-Bulgakov-300x91.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And there we have it&#8230;
