{"id":748,"date":"2012-09-13T20:02:31","date_gmt":"2012-09-13T20:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=748"},"modified":"2013-08-14T14:28:50","modified_gmt":"2013-08-14T14:28:50","slug":"kings-cross-to-ivanhoe-beacon-stage-1-kx-to-lisson-grove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2012\/09\/kings-cross-to-ivanhoe-beacon-stage-1-kx-to-lisson-grove\/","title":{"rendered":"King&#8217;s Cross to Birmingham (Grand Union canal) stage 1: KX to Lisson Grove"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the first stage of the <a href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2012\/09\/kings-cross-to-tring-along-the-grand-union-canal\/\">King\u2019s Cross to Birmingham jaunt via the Grand Union Canal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I joined the canal at King&#8217;s Cross and headed west towards Camden Town and Regent&#8217;s Park. \u00a0I know this route\u00a0extremely\u00a0well as I&#8217;ve been walking it since early childhood.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"The Grand Union \/ Regent's Canal near Camden Town\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Grand Union \/ Regent's Canal near Camden Town\" alt=\"The Grand Union \/ Regent's Canal near Camden Town\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-KxubS6RsEqc\/T-lf9JaEj7I\/AAAAAAAACU4\/D2gGG1kvzEc\/s640\/IMG-20120625-00049.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Grand Union \/ Regent&#8217;s Canal \u00a0&#8211; St Pancras Lock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I used to hang around the canal at Camden Market in my teens. This was when the market still had a down-at-heel bohemian air to it and was home to the excellent, and much missed, Compendium bookshop and a number of fine record shops. \u00a0The market was heaving as I passed through, now one of London&#8217;s top five tourist attractions.<\/p>\n<p>It was good to leave the market and move on down towards the zoo. \u00a0This section of the walk brought back happy childhood memories of fishing for sticklebacks and, when a bit older,\u00a0climbing\u00a0over the fence to get into the zoo for free.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blow-Up Bridge, near Regent's Park zoo\" alt=\"Blow-Up Bridge, near Regent's Park zoo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-PSsB_7X333M\/T-lf_zt2FjI\/AAAAAAAACVA\/7axHHGyZrAs\/s512\/IMG-20120625-00050.jpg\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blow-Up Bridge, near Regent&#8217;s Park zoo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I finished this stage of the walk at Lisson Grove where I left the canal and made my way down to Marylebone Road to catch a bus back to King&#8217;s Cross.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The canal at Lisson Grove\" alt=\"The canal at Lisson Grove\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-NYxyNUanj9Y\/T-lgF69r-jI\/AAAAAAAACVM\/2cdcK4ehpRw\/s512\/IMG-20120625-00051.jpg\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The canal at Lisson Grove<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the first stage of the King\u2019s Cross to Birmingham jaunt via the Grand Union Canal.
