{"id":641,"date":"2012-06-26T14:18:01","date_gmt":"2012-06-26T14:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=641"},"modified":"2014-11-22T15:07:28","modified_gmt":"2014-11-22T15:07:28","slug":"great-ouse-odyssey-stage-4-ely-to-earith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2012\/06\/great-ouse-odyssey-stage-4-ely-to-earith\/","title":{"rendered":"Great Ouse Odyssey stage 4: Ely to Earith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I walked this, the fourth stage of the <a title=\"The Great Ouse Odyssey \u2013 introduction\" href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2012\/06\/the-great-ouse-odyssey-introduction\/\">Great Ouse Odyssey<\/a> at the start of June 2012.<\/p>\n<p>I set off early from Ely on a\u00a0pleasant\u00a0Sunday morning. \u00a0The plan was to walk the 16 miles to Earith where Jo would pick me up in the car and we&#8217;d head on down the Ouse Valley to her mum&#8217;s house for lunch.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_643\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-643\" style=\"width: 391px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-643\" title=\"Ely to Earith route\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/lunapic_133502509023749_8.gif\" alt=\"Ely to Earith route\" width=\"391\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/lunapic_133502509023749_8.gif 391w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/lunapic_133502509023749_8-300x198.gif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-643\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ely to Earith route<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A mile into the walk I came across some wild campers who had clearly had a good night celebrating something or other (a certain monarch&#8217;s jubilee, so I hear). \u00a0They were all fast asleep so I crept quietly past.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wild campers on the Great Ouse\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-hJzB46T8Z9g\/T-lIhgqjeUI\/AAAAAAAACUk\/KyxWtp9HRnE\/s640\/DSCN1549.JPG\" alt=\"Wild campers on the Great Ouse\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wild campers on the Great Ouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After two miles the Great Ouse is joined by the Cam (which flows down to Cambridge). \u00a0At this point the Ouse takes a sharp turn to the west.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ouse meets Cam\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-lxDc9vCQJT0\/T-lIoO4ef-I\/AAAAAAAACQU\/zX-Iuv8MbJY\/s640\/DSCN1551.JPG\" alt=\"Ouse meets Cam\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ouse meets Cam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An hour later I passed the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.strethamoldengine.org.uk\/\">Stretham Old Engine<\/a>, a\u00a0steam-powered pumping station built in 1831. \u00a0It was this engine and hundreds like it that have helped keep the fens from flooding.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stretham Old Engine\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-gidMltwYugs\/T-lIrQXZ3WI\/AAAAAAAACUo\/r0qPglxXBLA\/s640\/DSCN1552.JPG\" alt=\"Stretham Old Engine\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stretham Old Engine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldwa.org.uk\/ldp\/members\/show_path.php?path_name=Ouse+Valley+Way\">Ouse Valley Way<\/a>, at least at this point, is clearly under-used by walkers. \u00a0The path was almost lost in the undergrowth for much of the way and after a while the my shoes and trousers were pretty much soaked through by the morning dew.<\/p>\n<p>However, the day was turning out to be quite warm so I trudged on happy in the relative isolation of the walk.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Swans on the Ouse\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-4trAALmgpwk\/T-lIyP2nBDI\/AAAAAAAACQs\/ZWnATRweMAU\/s640\/DSCN1554.JPG\" alt=\"Swans on the Ouse\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Swans on the Ouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I finally reached Earith where I was picked up by Jo and driven to Brampton for a lovely Sunday roast after which I promptly fell asleep on the couch. \u00a0Perfect.<\/p>\n<p>The next stage will take me on to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brampton,_Cambridgeshire\">Brampton<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I walked this, the fourth stage of the Great Ouse Odyssey at the start of June 2012.
