{"id":6012,"date":"2016-12-22T21:06:33","date_gmt":"2016-12-22T21:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=6012"},"modified":"2019-02-21T15:54:22","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T15:54:22","slug":"the-ten-highest-rated-cities-in-ukraine-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2016\/12\/the-ten-highest-rated-cities-in-ukraine-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"The ten highest rated cities in Ukraine 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In November, the Ukrainian website <a href=\"https:\/\/focus.ua\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Focus<\/a> published a <a href=\"https:\/\/focus.ua\/ratings\/359647\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> ranking\u00a0the top 20 Ukrainian cities. \u00a0The survey was compiled from over 33,000 questionnaires completed by Ukrainians from across the country (except, for obvious reasons, the occupied regions of the Donbas and Crimea).<\/p>\n<p>And the prize for the highest rated\u00a0city in Ukraine goes to&#8230;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Lviv!<\/h1>\n<p>Well, that is no surprise to me. When I visited in September I was blown-away by this gorgeous city, I&#8217;m happy to rank it among my favourite\u00a0<strong>three<\/strong> favourite cities in Europe without any hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>As it goes, the top ten places (red markers in the map) are\u00a0dominated by cities from the west of Ukraine. The war in the east contributes to this but also the growing connections to western Europe must make cities like Lviv an attractive option for\u00a0young people, families, job seekers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest shock for me is seeing Odessa languishing in 14th place! But more on that later.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=14X9Z-Bp9ulFwx2L2xGGtLeptbrc&amp;hl=en\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Below I&#8217;ll list the top 20 with my own thoughts plus the comments of a couple of non-Ukrainians on twitter who&#8217;ve had some experience of the cities.<\/p>\n<h1>1st &#8211; Lviv<\/h1>\n<p>Lviv, I&#8217;m in love with this town. The week I spent there was near perfect. Everything from the architecture and museums, to the coffee, \u00a0beer and food was a treat. The Focus report attributes\u00a0Kyiv&#8217;s high ranking to higher wages and better\u00a0career opportunities compared to other cities. What? Where? A completely new city for me (and maybe to everyone else in Ukraine). According to Focus, living is relatively cheap in Khmelnytskyi.<\/p>\n<p>There must be more to it that that\u00a0but I couldn&#8217;t face translating any more of the Russian into English to find out (yes, the article was in Russian, this happens in Ukraine).<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I&#8217;ll visit one day, maybe not, whatever the case, I&#8217;m sure Khmelnytskyi is a fine city.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"mt-insert\"><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_6120\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6120\" style=\"width: 1023px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6120 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Khmelnitsky.jpg\" alt=\"Khmelnitsky town hall\" width=\"1023\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Khmelnitsky.jpg 1023w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Khmelnitsky-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Khmelnitsky-768x503.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6120\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Khmelnitsky town hall (photo by <a href=\"http:\/\/khmelnytskyi.vsetke.com\/photos\" target=\"blank\">Ruslan Daniluk<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p><\/figure>\n<h1>4th &#8211; Vinnytsia<\/h1>\n<p>I was pleased to see Vinnytsia in the top rankings. \u00a0The city came to my attention as a possible stop-off point on a train journey I might take\u00a0from Kyiv to Odessa.<\/p>\n<p>During the Soviet period, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vinnytsia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Wikipedia<\/a>, a small US town was mocked-up in the city to train\u00a0KGB agents how to live in the USA! It\u00a0has a nice young and lively vibe to it.\u00a0I&#8217;d recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/samogon.org\/kovcheg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kovcheg<\/a>, a\u00a0restaurant that does great Armenian\/Georgian food and its own beer on site. MY favourite bar is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bunkermuz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bunkermuz<\/a>, a mixture of bar, night club and art gallery.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds good to me!<\/p>\n<p>Some of Frederick Forsyth&#8217;s thriller, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Devil%27s_Alternative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Devil&#8217;s Alternative<\/a>, was set in and around Ternopil (I read for just that reason).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"mt-insert\"><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_6139\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6139\" style=\"width: 2840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6139 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ternopoli-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ternopil\" width=\"2840\" height=\"1711\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ternopil (photo by VashDima)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p><\/figure>\n<h1>8th &#8211; Uzhhorod<\/h1>\n<p>The best thing about Uzhhorod must be its proximity to the Carpathian mountains, the next best thing is the name, how on earth it is pronounced? \u00a0Probably not that hard at all, Ukrainian words often look harder than they actually are (and vice versa).<\/p>\n<p>From the picture below, it certainly does look like a pretty place. A city from the east. \u00a0Kharkiv, Ukraine&#8217;s second biggest city. \u00a0Only 40km from the Russian border and 300km north of Luhansk, Kharkiv was a target for the Russian-backed separatists but thankfully pulled back from the edge.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what Focus has to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the people tend to praise the city&#8217;s services. I tend to confuse with\u00a0Cherkasy<\/p>\n<p>13th &#8211;\u00a0Kropyvnytskyi :\u00a0See\u00a0Zhytomyr<\/p>\n<p>14th &#8211; Odessa : What&#8217;s going on here? \u00a0It&#8217;s not that close to the ATO. Here&#8217;s what Focus has to say:<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Odessa is the second most expensive city in Ukraine after Kiev. The average wage level is lower than, for example, Dnipro or Zaporizhia&#8230;In addition, residents of the city gave an extremely low ranking for the level it of municipal services.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, but, the sea, the sea, the sea! The mystery and romance! Frederick Forsyth (again)!<\/p>\n<p>15th &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Cherkasy<\/strong> : On the Dnieper river, south of Kyiv. I tend to confuse with\u00a0Chernivtsi<\/p>\n<p>16th &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Poltava<\/strong> : I know nothing about Poltava<\/p>\n<p>17th &#8211; <strong>Dnipro<\/strong> : On the banks of the Dnieper, home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FirstDniproBrewery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dnipro Brewery<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>18th &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Zaporizhia<\/strong> : Cossacks!<\/p>\n<p>19th &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong> :\u00a0Some confusion surrounds the name of the place, also known as Nikolaev or Nikolayev. \u00a0Might account for 19th place.<\/p>\n<p>20th &#8211; <strong>Kherson<\/strong> : Deep south, lots of water. Cossacks!<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s missing? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ukrainetrek.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/zalishchyky-resort-ternopil-region-ukraine-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zalishchyky<\/a> is missing! Maybe next time.<\/p>\n<p>And there we have it, a light-hearted review of the top rated cities in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have you been to any of these cities?
