Signs of the steady\u00a0encroachment\u00a0of the sea upon the land were everywhere, sea defences, old and new\u00a0valiantly\u00a0attempting to hold back the inevitable.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fred and Martin\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-WY_g5VsI3I8\/T8W2nkaXnMI\/AAAAAAAACGw\/XsOYmY2D8bs\/s640\/DSCN1535.JPG\" alt=\"Fred and Martin\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fred and Martin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The day quickly heated up, even I resorted to slathering myself in sunscreen, a rare\u00a0occurrence!<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fred and Sam\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-1QM6BUk-eVg\/T8W2qd5YHwI\/AAAAAAAACG4\/HGZY-DlKYeI\/s640\/DSCN1533.JPG\" alt=\"Fred and Sam\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fred and Sam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We stopped twice. \u00a0Once for a cuppa tea and cake in a friendly cafe on the coast and the second just outside Cromer for a quick swim in the North Sea. \u00a0Yes, the sea was very, very cold but oh, it was so\u00a0exhilarating! \u00a0We lasted ten minutes or so before heading back to the warmth of the beach.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fred and Sam at Cromer\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-PJE4dI_yz58\/T8W2htgM9JI\/AAAAAAAACGg\/6r4PbAa1OOg\/s640\/DSCN1538.JPG\" alt=\"Fred and Sam at Cromer\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fred and Sam at Cromer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We arrived in Cromer just before lunch.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Self-eating hotdog at Cromer\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-bNTl7syygIE\/T8W2NZvX9DI\/AAAAAAAACFo\/dGhgCVQTKck\/s640\/DSCN1537.JPG\" alt=\"Self-eating hotdog at Cromer\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Self-eating hotdog at Cromer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Food was now very much on our minds, our appetites\u00a0heightened\u00a0somewhat by the swimming&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lunch at Cromer\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-QkzHOnz-vlo\/T8W2briDbpI\/AAAAAAAACGQ\/-aBjGyJl4F8\/s640\/DSCN1540.JPG\" alt=\"Lunch at Cromer\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lunch at Cromer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We had the good fortune of finding an excellent cafe just beside the sea-front that served up huge portions of delicious fish and chips (Sam, being a veggie, had veggie burgers).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fred enjoying his fish &amp; chips at Cromer\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-YxJKgssNRis\/T8W2em1m4HI\/AAAAAAAACGY\/0iKKni6YO_Y\/s640\/DSCN1539.JPG\" alt=\"Fred enjoying his fish &amp; chips at Cromer\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fred enjoying his fish &amp; chips at Cromer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lunch over we headed inland for the return journey.<\/p>\n<p>The countryside in this part of north Norfolk is\u00a0particularly\u00a0beautiful. \u00a0Lush rolling hills (yes, East Anglia is not all flat!), pastures full of wild flowers and welcoming shady woods. \u00a0I spotted plenty of nice looking spots for some wild camping, maybe next time.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Enjoying the view\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-93BOnezFeMM\/T8W2V21THWI\/AAAAAAAACGA\/oKgZafe-z6k\/s640\/DSCN1543.JPG\" alt=\"Enjoying the view\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Enjoying the view<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Far too soon we were back were we started&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Looking over Sheringham\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-xNHYV3Vqd6I\/T8W2QSEsknI\/AAAAAAAACFw\/QPZNvB7g_oM\/s640\/DSCN1546.JPG\" alt=\"Looking over Sheringham\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking over Sheringham<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Before leaving Sheringham we visited the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.priorymazegardens.co.uk\/\">Priory Maze and Gardens<\/a>. \u00a0The maze was great fun. \u00a0It looks very simple but is actually quite complex. \u00a0I finally managed to get out by finding a hole in the wall, I then amused myself by lobbing pine cones in the general direction of Fred who was still wandering around lost.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, one of the most enjoyable stages of the grand hike so far. \u00a0Many thanks to Fred and Sam for coming along!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I walked this, the 14th stage of my\u00a0Grand Norfolk Hike, on Sunday 27th May 2012.
