How did I come to plan a passage through a Europe to this city of lions?<\/p>\n<p>And why Ukraine? Lviv\" width=\"1497\" height=\"662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lviv-bigger-cropped2.jpg 1497w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lviv-bigger-cropped2-300x133.jpg 300w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lviv-bigger-cropped2-768x340.jpg 768w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lviv-bigger-cropped2-1024x453.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lviv-bigger-cropped2-1024x453-565x250.jpg 565w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lviv-bigger-cropped2-1024x453-900x398.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1497px) 100vw, 1497px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Makhno<\/h3>\n<p>For me, my interest in Ukraine starts in the early 1980s when I first read of Nestor Ivanovych Makhno from the village of Huliaipole, deep in the Cossack south.<\/p>\n<p>Makhno led an anarchist-peasant army, the Makhnovshchina, \u00a0during the Russian revolution and civil war.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Makhnovshchina\u00a0fought firstly against the Whites\u00a0and then later the Red Army after betrayal by Trotsky and the Bolsheviks.<\/p>\n<p>Makhno was a heroic figure, not a perfect man by any means but one who symbolised freedom and the idea of the equality of all people. He was an inspiration to me as an anarchist youth.<\/p>\n<h3>Independence and Euro Maidan<\/h3>\n<p>Twenty five years later the USSR collapses and Ukraine gains its freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Time passes. \u00a0I\u2019m just about aware of the Orange\u00a0Revolution but it&#8217;s the Euro Maidan of November 2013, and the subsequent aftermath and Russian aggression, that fully captures my attention that brings me back once again to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<h3>The city of lions<\/h3>\n<p>So that\u2019s Ukraine, what about Lviv?<\/p>\n<p>I hadn\u2019t heard of the city before the start of 2015. I first saw Lviv mentioned on Twitter, the name immediately interested me, the two consonants at the start of the short name, how on earth was it pronounced?<\/p>\n<p>I dug deeper, a city near the geo-political heart of this\u00a0great European continent. The history; chaotic, often bloody and terrible.<\/p>\n<p>A gateway to the East, a boiling cauldron\u00a0of history, culture, ethnicity, religion and ideology.<\/p>\n<p>Oh and so beautiful!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lviv, \u041b\u044c\u0432i\u0432, Lw\u00f3w, Lvov, Lemberg, Leopolis.
