Union Canal hike : Milton Keynes to Iron Trunk aqueduct"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the eighth\u00a0stage of the\u00a0<a href=\"\/2012\/09\/kings-cross-to-tring-along-the-grand-union-canal\/\">Grand Union Canal Expedition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">O<\/span> n the map below\u00a0the little blue hiking icon shows where I&#8217;m up to (green line), more than half way I&#8217;d say! \u00a0The red line to the right is the route of my hike along the <a href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2014\/12\/the-great-ouse-odyssey-introduction\/\">River Great Ouse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The two paths cross each other at the blue hiking icon.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=zoYyilYPr4S0.k1Mn08DW87Fo\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t face the walk from Milton Keynes (MK) station to the canal so I caught a cab to the towpath and set off towards Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>After an hour&#8217;s\u00a0hike through MK I reached the far-flung suburbs and the day began to class=\"wp-caption-text\">72 miles!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By midday I had\u00a0reached my destination, the magnificent Iron Trunk\u00a0aqueduct, beneath which flows the mighty River Great class=\"wp-caption-text\">Iron Trunk aqueduct with the Great Ouse passing underneath<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Opened in 1811 as the fourth attempt to cross the Great Ouse, this marvellous example\u00a0of Victorian engineering is the oldest &#8216;iron trough&#8217; aqueduct in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>This is how it looks from the banks of the Great Ouse.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4539\" href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2014\/12\/the-great-ouse-odyssey-introduction\/\">Great Ouse Odyssey expedition<\/a>) before heading back to MK.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ouse-valley-way-marker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4544\"
