{"id":3506,"date":"2015-04-03T20:52:52","date_gmt":"2015-04-03T20:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=3506"},"modified":"2016-07-29T13:33:13","modified_gmt":"2016-07-29T13:33:13","slug":"my-top-10-london-punk-songs-east-end-by-the-cockney-rejects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2015\/04\/my-top-10-london-punk-songs-east-end-by-the-cockney-rejects\/","title":{"rendered":"My top 10 London punk songs <BR>&#8216;East End&#8217; by The Cockney Rejects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"note\">This post is one of a series describing my <a title=\"Top 10 London punk songs\" href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2014\/12\/my-top-10-london-punk-songs\/\">top ten London punk songs<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5487 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Rejects_logo_largejpeg.jpg\" alt=\"Cockney Rejects logo\" width=\"389\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Rejects_logo_largejpeg.jpg 500w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Rejects_logo_largejpeg-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cockneyrejects.com\/\">Cockney Rejects<\/a> burst onto the London punk scene in 1979 with &#8216;Flares and Slippers&#8217;, a piercing sonic assault on the wearers of said items of clothing.<\/p>\n<p>The single was much loved by John Peel, I can vividly remember him\u00a0playing the single\u00a0for the first time,\u00a0there was nothing like it around at the time and the band made a strong impact\u00a0on me.<\/p>\n<p>A few months later they released &#8220;I&#8217;m Not a Fool&#8221;, the b-side of which was &#8216;East End&#8217;, a joyfully noisy hymn in praise of the band&#8217;s home turf:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Take a walk around Bethnal Green<br \/>\nMeet the Mile End mob<br \/>\nWell they&#8217;re mean<br \/>\nGet a 69 bus to Canning Town<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s never ever, ever gonna get us down<\/p>\n<p>East End!<\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t help it if we&#8217;re working class yobs<br \/>\nWe can&#8217;t help it if we hate the snobs<br \/>\nThey can stick to their beaches\u00a0and their seaside and sand<br \/>\nCos we&#8217;ve got the best home in the land<\/p>\n<p>East End!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All this pegged on to a glorious hand clapping, football chant riff, for your perfect sing-along punk rock frenzy.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1040\" height=\"780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oLB2gDLwAbs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What else do you want?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3518\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3518\" style=\"width: 496px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3518\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/photo_bandmugshots.jpg\" alt=\"Cockney Rejects mug shots\" width=\"496\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/photo_bandmugshots.jpg 496w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/photo_bandmugshots-300x118.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fine young men<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The band did eventually transformed into a &#8216;heavy rock&#8217; outfit and it all went downhill from there.
