{"id":2956,"date":"2014-12-20T18:14:13","date_gmt":"2014-12-20T18:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=2956"},"modified":"2015-01-15T16:50:23","modified_gmt":"2015-01-15T16:50:23","slug":"the-woods-a-dog-and-a-hobo-stove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2014\/12\/the-woods-a-dog-and-a-hobo-stove\/","title":{"rendered":"The woods, a dog and a hobo stove"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The\u00a0idea<\/h2>\n<p>The idea was a simple one really. \u00a0Go to the woods with the dog (Smithy), make a cup of tea with the IKEA hobo stove and read a book. \u00a0What could go wrong? \u00a0Nothing really, apart from a little bit at the end of the day, and even that turned out well.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A subsidiary idea was to look for potential wild camping spots, more on that later.<\/p>\n<p>I also wanted to try out the &#8216;pocket hammock&#8217; (known as the &#8220;British Army Issue Travel Hammock&#8221;) I had purchased\u00a0for a tenner or so the previous week. Anyone who walks regularly in the winter knows what it&#8217;s like trying to find a dry place to sit, I was hoping a lightweight hammock might do the trick&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>The forest<\/h2>\n<p>I chose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestry.gov.uk\/thetfordforestpark\">Thetford Forest<\/a> as it is two stops on the train from where I live and is HUGE.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, when I lived in London I thought <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hampstead_Heath\">Hampstead Heath<\/a> was large\u00a0(320 hectares) and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epping_Forest\">Epping Fores<\/a>t even larger (2,476 hectares) but both are\u00a0tiny when compared to Thetford (9,000 hectares).<\/p>\n<p>You can easily spend a Saturday in Thetford Forest and not see another person (try doing that on the Heath or in\u00a0Epping), this is the East Anglian wilderness at its finest!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2965\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2965\" style=\"width: 658px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Thetford-forest.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2965 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Thetford-forest.png\" alt=\"Thetford Forest\" width=\"658\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Thetford-forest.png 658w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Thetford-forest-300x271.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2965\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thetford Forest (the red line is my walk)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The walk<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2976\" style=\"width: 171px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2976\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/smith1.jpg\" alt=\"Smithy on the trail\" width=\"171\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/smith1.jpg 306w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/smith1-140x300.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 171px) 100vw, 171px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smithy on the trail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I left Ely with Smithy pulling me along enthusiastically. \u00a0It must be difficult being a dog sometimes, you never quite know if this walk will be\u00a0a quick 10 minutes around the block or a long 10 miles through the woods.<\/p>\n<p>By the time we hopped on the train to Brandon, Smithy had worked things out. He was a happy boy.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived at Brandon just after nine. \u00a0An overcast day with a chill in the air, that didn&#8217;t matter to us, we were out in the countryside again, looking for adventure!<\/p>\n<p>I decided on a section of the forest I&#8217;d not explored before. \u00a0We walked towards the village of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weeting\">Weeting<\/a> and thirty minutes later were making our way\u00a0down a tree lined corridor towards the forest.<\/p>\n<p>All in all our hike\u00a0was in the region of ten miles. \u00a0I used the compass quite a bit as I wasn&#8217;t always 100% sure where I was.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2961\" style=\"width: 421px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/binged.it\/1C7GVk8\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2961 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/brandon-map.png\" alt=\"Map of the walk\" width=\"421\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/brandon-map.png 421w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/brandon-map-300x291.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 421px) 100vw, 421px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map of the walk (click for map in Bing)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The tea, the stove and the hammock<\/h2>\n<p>Eventually, after following a narrow trail\u00a0for a while, we spotted what looked like\u00a0a deer track and took that into a clearing in the forest.<\/p>\n<p>It was a good spot to stop. \u00a0I hung\u00a0the hammock between two trees and carefully manoeuvred myself onto it. \u00a0Ah it was just what I had hoped for, lightweight and really easy to put up. \u00a0Why hadn&#8217;t I thought of this years ago?<\/p>\n<p>With the hammock in place, I stuffed the hobo stove with paper and dry kindling that\u00a0I&#8217;d brought with me. I decided on another tea and filled the kettle up once more.<\/p>\n<p>I was drawn to watching the fire within the stove and savouring the feeling of being there in the wood with the heat and colours of the fire and the smell of the burning wood.
