Ever since the first hobo jumped a freight train the lonesome traveller has needed a quick and easy way to brew up a cup of tea.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, hobo\u00a0stoves are\u00a0put together with\u00a0discarded tin cans. \u00a0The top of the can is removed, small holes punched around for air and a large opening on the side for fuel.<\/p>\n<p>Kindling, followed by larger sticks and such like are dumped into the can and after a while a hearty and warming fire is chugging away.<\/p>\n<p>I first heard of the IKEA hobo stove via the bushcraft community. \u00a0It seems that some bright spark had noticed the\u00a0IKEA cutlery drainer could be easily converted into a hobo stove, all it takes is a metal cutting tool for the large opening, everything else is ready and in place.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2884\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2884\" style=\"width: 392px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2884\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Optimized-ikea.jpg\" alt=\"IKEA Cutlery Drainer \" width=\"392\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Optimized-ikea.jpg 392w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Optimized-ikea-261x300.jpg 261w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IKEA cutlery drainer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lacking a metal-cutting tool I went to Ebay and quickly found someone selling them at the very reasonable price of \u00a310, with a few bushcrafty type bits and pieces thrown in and a nice canvas bag to carry it around in.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, I KNOW a hobo wouldn&#8217;t pay \u00a310 for a stove, let alone one from IKEA that actual sells at \u00a32.5o but that&#8217;s not the point of this post. \u00a0I&#8217;m paying homage to the stove not the hobo and I just love the idea of re-purposing things\u00a0and then re-using them in ways completely unexpected by the original producer.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-u3AKBUmJkKQ\/Ub3urcZGiMI\/AAAAAAAAFUA\/9qMaYWkzK2s\/s512\/20130616_160509.jpg\" alt=\"IKEA Hobo Stove in action\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">IKEA Hobo Stove in action in Thetford Forest<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Anyway, I purchased the stove and quickly put it to use on a hike around Thetford Forest one spring day last year. \u00a0The kindling caught ablaze quickly and in no time I had a roaring little fire going and water boiled up for a cuppa tea in about five minutes. \u00a0Oh, it was wonderful, the smell, the heat, the glowing orange and red of the flames.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year I took it out with me on a <a title=\"An early spring wild camp in Badger Wood \u2013 Hertfordshire\" href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2014\/04\/an-early-spring-wild-camp-in-badger-wood-hertfordshire\/\">wild camp<\/a> and it served me well, giving heat for tea and supper and then keeping me company in the dark wood on my own.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 457px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-MBchbdPSMhM\/UyoXkSIzpyI\/AAAAAAAABvo\/_TCszeqL00g\/s512\/P1000283.JPG\" alt=\"IKEA Hobo Stove on a wild camp\" width=\"457\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">IKEA Hobo Stove on a wild camp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The IKEA hobo stove is relatively lightweight\u00a0and is very robust. \u00a0Sure, it could be lighter and doesn&#8217;t\u00a0fold down to the size of a CD cover (like the excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.backpackinglight.co.uk\/bushcraft\/RD103.html\">honey stove<\/a>) but on the other hand it doesn&#8217;t require careful handling nor does it have fiddly bits that need slotting together. \u00a0Once the fire is out it cools down very quickly and can be packed away with minimum fuss.<\/p>\n<p>There isn&#8217;t really a downside to this fine stove, I heartily recommend it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hobo stoves have been around for a long time.
