Birmingham itself is up in the top left corner, still quite far away&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2256\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2256\" style=\"width: 395px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2256\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Screen-shot-2013-12-31-at-20.33.13.png\" alt=\"Map showing route taken so far...\" width=\"395\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Screen-shot-2013-12-31-at-20.33.13.png 395w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Screen-shot-2013-12-31-at-20.33.13-300x264.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2256\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map showing the hike so far&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I arrived at Tring station on a bright, brisk, sunny morning on one of the last days of December 2013.\u00a0 My last hike of the year!\u00a0 It had been a while since the last stage of this expedition (February 2013) and I was looking forward to picking up the trail.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I noticed after leaving the station was a sign-post for the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Ridgeway\">Ridgeway Trail<\/a> that continues for 87 miles westwards to Wiltshire on ancient tracks on chalk ridges.\u00a0 I&#8217;d love to hike this most English of trails, one day, some day&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-wv_NWZEzPVo\/UsL-T4VfsgI\/AAAAAAAABf8\/du_n9QT8kNI\/s640\/P1000130.JPG\" alt=\"Signpost for the Ridgeway Trail\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ridgeway Trail, one for another day&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After a short walk I joined the canal once more.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-TA5_bA2q6vg\/UsL-n_rpJ0I\/AAAAAAAABf8\/PKYBOUeKzFQ\/s512\/P1000131.JPG\" alt=\"The Grand Union Canal at Tring\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Grand Union Canal at Tring<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It felt wonderful to be out hiking again after the indulgences of the holiday season.\u00a0 A light frost covered the grass, frozen puddles offered themselves up for breaking, all was good with the world.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-1fWPOoYhpmA\/UsL-7jj_nRI\/AAAAAAAABf8\/CIySvi6LdGI\/s640\/P1000136.JPG\" alt=\"Lock-keeper's house near Tring\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lock-keeper&#8217;s house near Tring<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tring reservoir looked striking under the clear winter sky. I was taken by the contrast between the water and reeds.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-sfgpNT0mcwA\/UsL_abkWj8I\/AAAAAAAABf8\/9hkwqOKfzjs\/s640\/P1000137.JPG\" alt=\"Tring Reservoirs\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tring reservoir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The fella below studied me carefully as I passed by.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-r16wv9mhdyM\/UsL_rOfESGI\/AAAAAAAABg8\/OXaD5uK2990\/s640\/P1000139.JPG\" alt=\"Dog on narrowboat\" width=\"576\" height=\"446\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dog on narrow boat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I admired the picturesque view of Marsworth church from the canal.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-JkCgAj1pF6U\/UsMAKd5G5FI\/AAAAAAAABf8\/y3WL-Xc_yng\/s640\/P1000140.JPG\" alt=\"Church\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marsworth church<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ivinghoe_Beacon\">Ivinghoe Beacon<\/a>, at 757ft above sea level, dominated the skyline for much of the hike.\u00a0 It would be a great adventure to wild camp at the summit, maybe later on in 2014.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-8GyJApGuLvk\/UsMAdd1qDFI\/AAAAAAAABf8\/0jsN0xcOzd4\/s640\/P1000147.JPG\" alt=\"Ivinghoe Beacon from the canal\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ivinghoe Beacon from the canal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Towards the afternoon the clouds began to slowly gather&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-BjTCyUoFngc\/UsMBKVjEyhI\/AAAAAAAABf8\/XUsAOW3YpiU\/s512\/P1000152.JPG\" alt=\"Lock\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The land south of Leighton Buzzard is flat and the skies wide, reminding me of my fen home in Cambridgeshire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-_8vvksr-F6o\/UsMAuyiKTPI\/AAAAAAAABf8\/xVF185CWfnM\/s640\/P1000156.JPG\" alt=\"Canal\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I think the photo below is the best of the day&#8217;s hike, I love how the clouds are reflected with such strength and clarity on the water.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-ZuN456DgfB0\/UsMBH1H1qfI\/AAAAAAAABf8\/JqbxwXBcV08\/s640\/P1000157.JPG\" alt=\"Canal\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The last lock before Leighton Buzzard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not long after this scene I reached the outskirts of Leighton Buzzard, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Ouzel\">River Ouzel<\/a>, a tributary of the River Great Ouse, ran alongside the canal for a short while.<\/p>\n<p>And then, suddenly I was in the centre of town, sharing the towpath with supermarket shoppers and families out for a stroll.<\/p>\n<p>A fine end to my hiking year and I&#8217;m looking forward now to the next stage of the hike that will take me on to Milton Keynes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the sixth stage of the\u00a0King\u2019s Cross to Birmingham jaunt via the Grand Union Canal.
