I felt good as I made my way along quiet roads and bridleways towards the first wood of my hike.<\/p>\n<p>The countryside looked and smelt young and vibrant as the morning clouds began to clear, it was impossible not to whistle a happy tune as I walked.<\/p>\n<p>The idea was to head southwards towards the town of Cuffley which stands on the very outer edge of the London. \u00a0The walk would take in six woods of varying sizes.<\/p>\n<p>I also intended to use the hike as an opportunity to find some new wild camping locations for Spring 2014, never too early to start looking!<\/p>\n<h2>Bramfield Woods<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-0V-Wgi0wBxU\/UoaKa0jih1I\/AAAAAAAABak\/ol8v8bmKwZc\/s640\/1.%2520Bramfield.JPG\" alt=\"The entrance to Bramfield woods\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The entrance to Bramfield woods<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I found the entrance to Bramfield wood a couple of miles south of Watton. \u00a0It&#8217;s a lovely piece of woodland, I saw horse riders and a couple of dog walkers and not one trace of litter, wow, a really good sign.<\/p>\n<h2>Park Wood<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-iqnIv7clFAo\/UoaK1fnh5DI\/AAAAAAAABb0\/aMnamwT8AH4\/s512\/2.Park%2520Wood2.JPG\" alt=\"Park wood\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Park wood<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I passed through the village of Bramfield and crossed a muddy field to Park wood. This was another gorgeous wood and again no litter, I strolled slowly under the trees, no one else was about, just the odd daft Pheasant flapping in terror at my approach.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"River Mimram\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-FUHL2scD7xU\/UoaKnJHLB0I\/AAAAAAAABbQ\/SfSYlI7KQa8\/s640\/2.5%2520R.Mimram%25202.JPG\" alt=\"River Mimram\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">River Mimram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leaving Park wood I crossed the lovely River Mimram and headed on south towards Bayford. This section of the walk was wood-less <strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong> I managed to get lost, which is always somewhat embarrassing and always frustrating..<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-78Cp1L979rE\/UoaKrcl7vpI\/AAAAAAAABbc\/DxA-_np2GO8\/s640\/2.5%2520near%2520Bayford.JPG\" alt=\"A friendly horse near Bayford\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A friendly horse near Bayford<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once back on the right path I stopped to chat to a friendly looking horse.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-1Eu9UqRAn00\/UoaK1vW7PyI\/AAAAAAAABb4\/oCHI4g6x1yo\/s640\/2.5%2520tree%2520down.JPG\" alt=\"Fallen tree on path\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The aftermath of the previous week&#8217;s stormageddon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Occasionally I found my path blocked by trees blown down in the storms of the previous week.<\/p>\n<h2>Bayford Wood<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-ouZbVKjFmmA\/UoaK8HTReQI\/AAAAAAAABcE\/wyCoxTLivio\/s512\/3.Bayford.JPG\" alt=\"Entrance to Bayford wood\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entrance to Bayford wood<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At last I reached Bayford wood. \u00a0I stood at the entrance for a while, stunned by the beauty of the wood in her autumn colours.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-MYzuSCuxXNM\/UoaLCHjXYhI\/AAAAAAAABcY\/Jsxc3itdTYw\/s512\/3.Bayford3.JPG\" alt=\"Stream running through Bayford wood\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stream running through Bayford wood<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A small stream ran through the wood, I was very tempted to leave the footpath and venture deeper into the trees but time was against me. \u00a0I&#8217;ll have to come back another day (or night!).<\/p>\n<h2>Blackfan Wood<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-9Xv_9dlqDUU\/UoaK_yUcx0I\/AAAAAAAABcQ\/pBHL9nUoOSc\/s512\/4.Blackfan.JPG\" alt=\"Blackfan wood\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blackfan wood<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The route to Blackfan wood from Bayford wood (less than half a mile as the crow flies) \u00a0follows a road and I didn&#8217;t fancy that. \u00a0I checked the map and noticed that a only couple of fields stood between me and Blackfan. \u00a0Time for a quick bit of trespass!<\/p>\n<p>I hopped over a gate and walked quickly across the fields, I felt somewhat exposed in my bright red jacket. \u00a0Finally I reached the barbed wire fence that ran between the fields and Blackfan wood. \u00a0I gingerly stepped over the fence and slipped on the muddy surface, tearing a gash in my trousers. \u00a0Oh well, I was over the fence though and otherwise unharmed.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t remember that much about Blackfan wood but I&#8217;m sure it was lovely.<\/p>\n<h2>Wormley Wood<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-z_epbtWGvs0\/UoaLMHcEZFI\/AAAAAAAABc4\/MmipwdzUAD8\/s512\/5.%2520Wormley.JPG\" alt=\"Entrance to Wormley wood\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entrance to Wormley wood<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was starting to tire by the time I reached Wormley wood.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-pCw5xKfeAEA\/UoaLG-I3dzI\/AAAAAAAABck\/MSwxKoszUao\/s640\/5.%2520Wormley2.JPG\" alt=\"Tea break in Wormley wood\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tea break in Wormley wood<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I found a bench in the middle of the wood, took my brew-kit out and made a wondrous cuppa tea. I sat there for half an hour or more and not a single other person passed my way. Just me, the trees, the breeze and the birds. \u00a0Perfect.<\/p>\n<h2>Derry&#8217;s Woods<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-KnZlvM8mfZQ\/UoaLKo0qUkI\/AAAAAAAABdU\/dz5f2vqXUnU\/s512\/6.Derrys.JPG\" alt=\"Entrance to Derry's wood\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entrance to Derry&#8217;s wood<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wormley wood blends into Derry&#8217;s wood at some point, I was tired by this and didn&#8217;t pay that much attention to my surroundings, which is a shame as I&#8217;m certain Derry&#8217;s wood has much to offer.<\/p>\n<h2>Cuffley<\/h2>\n<p>I let Derry&#8217;s wood and arrived in Cuffley after a mile or so of road-walking. \u00a0London was only a few miles to my south, dusk was falling, the train station was a welcome site.<\/p>\n<p>Hertfordshire, a county of many fine woods and these are only six of them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Watton-at-Stone I arrived at Watton-at-Stone station just after 9.30am.
