{"id":2050,"date":"2013-10-20T18:07:13","date_gmt":"2013-10-20T18:07:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=2050"},"modified":"2017-02-18T13:57:52","modified_gmt":"2017-02-18T13:57:52","slug":"four-days-on-the-sentier-cathare-cathar-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2013\/10\/four-days-on-the-sentier-cathare-cathar-way\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Cathar Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Cathar Way is a 250km footpath in the French Pyrenees. \u00a0It runs between Port La Nouvelle on the Mediterranean coast to the historic town of Foix.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img class=\" wp-image-2013 \" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/carte_new.jpg\" alt=\"Map showing the Route of the Cathar Way\" width=\"730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/carte_new.jpg 689w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/carte_new-300x81.jpg 300w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/carte_new-600x162.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 689px) 100vw, 689px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a well-marked trail, followed by looking out for posts with coloured markings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-j4C9WgdN7a4\/UimE1sthDPI\/AAAAAAAABQw\/0yghsPLqy9A\/s512\/DSCN0073.JPG\" alt=\"Way marker on the Sentier Cathare\" width=\"543\" height=\"491\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Much of the path is in the foothills of the Pyrenees and takes in many castles and fortifications built by the Cathars between the 12th and 14th centuries.<\/p>\n<h2>My hikes on the Cathar Way<\/h2>\n<h3>Saint Julia de Bec to Maury (2013)<\/h3>\n<p>My hike was in mid-August (hot!), I walked for four days, starting at the tiny village of Saint Julia de Bec and finishing up in the town of Maury, some 50 km to the east.\u00a0 I camped two nights and spent the final night in a gite.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=1976\">Day one:\u00a0Saint Julia de Bec to Bugarach<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=2003\">Day two: Bugarach to Cubi\u00e8res-sur-Cinoble<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=2059\">Day three:\u00a0Cubi\u00e8res-sur-Cinoble to Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=2061\">Day four:\u00a0Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse to Maury<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was hot! \u00a0Mid August is probably\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong> the best time to go hiking in the south of France but that was the only time I had available. \u00a0The secret is to start walking early, between 6.30 and 7.30am, and get the main part of the hike over by 11am. \u00a0By midday it became very hard work in the open and I was constantly looking out for shady areas.<\/p>\n<p>The hills are gorgeous at that time of the morning so it&#8217;s well worth getting up then anyway.<\/p>\n<h3>Coudons to Axat (2016)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2017\/02\/on-the-cathar-way-coudons-to-axat\/\">Coudons to Axat<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Guide books<\/h2>\n<p>I used\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.walking.demon.co.uk\/catharway.htm\">&#8216;Walk!
