{"id":1677,"date":"2013-05-27T06:25:16","date_gmt":"2013-05-27T06:25:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=1677"},"modified":"2014-11-07T17:01:42","modified_gmt":"2014-11-07T17:01:42","slug":"a-late-spring-wild-camp-by-the-river-wissey-in-norfolk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2013\/05\/a-late-spring-wild-camp-by-the-river-wissey-in-norfolk\/","title":{"rendered":"A late spring wild camp by the River Wissey in Norfolk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I walked this, the second stage\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"The Great Ouse cut-off channel expedition \u2013 Introduction\" href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2012\/06\/the-great-ouse-cut-off-channel-expedition-introduction\/\">the Great Ouse cut-off channel expedition<\/a>, in May 2013.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1679\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1679\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1679\" title=\"Great Ouse Cut-Off Channel \/ River Wissey route\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screenshot-2013-05-26-at-08.44.42.png\" alt=\"Great Ouse Cut-Off Channel \/ River Wissey route\" width=\"510\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screenshot-2013-05-26-at-08.44.42.png 510w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screenshot-2013-05-26-at-08.44.42-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great Ouse Cut-Off Channel (orange line) \/ River Wissey (purple line) route<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I joined the Great Ouse Cut-Off (or &#8216;Relief&#8217; as it&#8217;s also known) Channel at Downham Market at 6pm one mild Tuesday evening in May.<\/p>\n<p>The Cut-Off Channel is a man-made waterway who&#8217;s job it is to divert water from the River Great Ouse when levels start to rise.<\/p>\n<p>The Channel flows down to Lakenheath, some 20 miles or so to the south before going underground until it reaches Essex, where it empties out into a reservoir.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"Great Ouse Cut-Off (Relief) Channel at Downham Market\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-Ak-NgiDot9Q\/UaHSbSFWo9I\/AAAAAAAAArU\/aexiCZSEOec\/s640\/DSCN2272.JPG\" alt=\"Great Ouse Cut-Off (Relief) Channel at Downham Market\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great Ouse Cut-Off (Relief) Channel at Downham Market<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the Channel cuts through privately-owned farmland, the actual banks (channel-side that is) are maintained and managed by the Environment Agency (EA).<\/p>\n<p>The EA is a government body, paid for by me out of my taxes, so as far as I&#8217;m concerned I can hike on the land.<\/p>\n<p>Is the land actually open for anyone to walk along?<\/p>\n<p>Well I had to climb over a fence and scramble through some barbed-wire but there aren&#8217;t any signs saying entry is forbidden.<\/p>\n<p>Though some things ARE forbidden&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"No fun...\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-_nEm2ApKBcQ\/UaHShFNxXmI\/AAAAAAAAAr4\/YiX8B1umReQ\/s640\/DSCN2281.JPG\" alt=\"No fun...allowed, except, possibly, walking\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">No fun allowed, except, possibly, walking<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>No, no, no&#8230;but what about walking? (And just what is the difference between &#8216;swimming&#8217; and &#8216;bathing&#8217;?). The horses along the way didn&#8217;t care about any daft signs&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Horses on the Ouse channel\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-jS1MV_eRlzo\/UaHSebOppLI\/AAAAAAAAAro\/fFSST_JObxY\/s640\/DSCN2274.JPG\" alt=\"Horses on the Ouse channel\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Horse on the Ouse channel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The banks of the Cut-Off Channel are a delight to walk along. \u00a0A gorgeous riot of lush green everywhere you look.<\/p>\n<p>Trees line the banks, lovely grassy pathways to stroll along and no litter anywhere. \u00a0Very little sign of anyone else about at all. On the photo below, the red pin is the Channel, the blue pin the Wissey and the green icon my wild camp.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1691\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1691\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1691\" title=\"Junction of the Cut-Off Channel and the River Wissey\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screenshot-2013-05-26-at-21.46.24.png\" alt=\"Junction of the Cut-Off Channel and the River Wissey\" width=\"214\" height=\"298\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1691\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Junction of the Cut-Off Channel and the River Wissey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Wissey actually crosses the Channel on an aqueduct and I would have liked to given it a proper inspection but the light was fading fast (9pm) and I needed to find a pitch quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t get as close to the river for the camp as I would have liked. \u00a0The banks of the Wissey were covered waist-high in stinging nettles and I didn&#8217;t have the time to trample down a spot for the night. Instead I found a place on the side of the path.<\/p>\n<p>It was almost dark as I set up camp, I pulled out my head torch and discovered the useless thing was broken.
