Lapwings called to each other as the skies cleared and the sun started to shine.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"The Great Ouse at Earith\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-xEN3KaCXfxE\/UWRqlLGrlzI\/AAAAAAAAAeI\/Ljxv7jOEkv4\/s640\/SAM_0426.JPG\" alt=\"The Great Ouse at Earith\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Great Ouse at Earith<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Ouse was still at a high level after breaking her banks and flooding earlier in the year.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"The Great Ouse near Earith\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-Tf6jrM7_YV8\/UWRqjXzxC7I\/AAAAAAAAAeA\/42iKAO24g-A\/s640\/SAM_0428.JPG\" alt=\"The Great Ouse near Earith\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Great Ouse near Earith<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Within half an hour of starting the walk I had stuffed my jumper into my rucksack, what a relief to be hiking in the spring sun, at long last!<\/p>\n<p>I passed a Greenwich Meridian marker against which I checked my compass. This is the second time I seen such a marker. \u00a0The last one was as I went through the village of Orwell on my <a title=\"Royston \u2013 Cambridge walk: A fine day in South Cambridgeshire\" href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2012\/09\/royston-cambridge-walk-a-fine-day-in-south-cambridgeshire\/\">Royston to Cambridge hike<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Greenwich Meridian\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-ZuAJCUlcuq8\/UWRqtJsfQMI\/AAAAAAAAAeY\/Ni-OVwDlN0Q\/s512\/SAM_0429.JPG\" alt=\"Greenwich Meridian\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greenwich Meridian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I stopped for lunch in the pretty village of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holywell,_Cambridgeshire\">Holywell<\/a>. There is a lovely garden and bench just outside the church. \u00a0I ate my cornish pasty in the midday sun.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" town isn&#8217;t pleasant, passing through an industrial estate. \u00a0Unfortunately the Ouse Valley Way can&#8217;t always follow the route of the river, much of which lies on private land.<\/p>\n<p>I admired the handsome 15th century bridge at St Ives.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  \" title=\"St. Ives bridge\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Ives bridge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On my way out of St Ives\u00a0I caught sight of the rare Cambridgeshire Wildcat.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A rare Cambridgeshire wildcat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I became somewhat lost between Houghton Mill and Godmanchester.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A rare Ouse Valley Way marker near Houghton Mill<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The local council had given up marking the route at this point, leaving travellers to enlist passing locals as guides across the wet, wet water-meadows. \u00a0I was lucky to find such a local who kindly led me back to my path.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption tried to buy a pint at the Brampton Mill pub, I didn&#8217;t have any cash on me and they wouldn&#8217;t take my card unless I spent over \u00a35. \u00a0Oh well&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width:
