Stage 5: Moor Park to Tring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the\u00a0fifth\u00a0stage of the <a title=\"King\u2019s Cross to Birmingham via the Grand Union Canal\" href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2012\/09\/kings-cross-to-tring-along-the-grand-union-canal\/\">King\u2019s Cross to Birmingham expedition<\/a> via the Grand Union Canal.<\/p>\n<p>The map below shows the route of the expedition so far, Birmingham remains far off (well, a 100 miles or so) to the north.\u00a0 The red line shows the hike completed prior to this stage, the purple line shows this stage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1273\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1273\" style=\"width: 443px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1273\" title=\"Route map - Grand Union Canal hike, Moor Park to Tring\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/map1.gif\" alt=\"Route map - Grand Union Canal hike, Moor Park to Tring\" width=\"443\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/map1.gif 443w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/map1-300x252.gif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Route map &#8211; Grand Union Canal hike, Moor Park to Tring<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was cold, overcast and somewhat windy when I set-off again on the trail to Birmingham.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Grand Union Canal walk marker\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-0ZAH8_oCwXU\/URKzCFD6RQI\/AAAAAAAAAWQ\/bPTZKuzfklg\/s512\/DSCN2114.JPG\" alt=\"Grand Union Canal walk marker\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grand Union Canal walk marker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I reached the towpath at midday, after a mile and a half walk from Moor Park tube station.<\/p>\n<p>Arriving this late in the day gave me just five hours to cover 17 miles. I would have to move swiftly if I wanted to reach <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tring\">Tring<\/a> before darkness set in.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"Narrowboats entering a lock\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-NGeHAiMokMI\/URKzCWppy6I\/AAAAAAAAAWU\/VF7LVC8ekyI\/s640\/DSCN2115.JPG\" alt=\"Narrowboats entering a lock\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Narrowboats entering a lock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thanks to the fast pace I&#8217;d set myself I didn&#8217;t have time to watch narrowboats move slowly through locks, something I enjoy doing usually.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll have plenty of time for that later on in the year when hiking days stretch lazily out into the evening.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"Water flowers\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-3Libnu7KAkA\/URKzKcjQYFI\/AAAAAAAAAWw\/zUszquOMPjw\/s640\/DSCN2119.JPG\" alt=\"Water flowers\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Water flowers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I saw a bunch of flowers scattered across the surface of the canal and wondered about the story behind their sad fate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Narrowboat and bridge\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-DydDNMgnWT0\/URKzJRNBIxI\/AAAAAAAAAWk\/8PZR-tQU_vE\/s640\/DSCN2122.JPG\" alt=\"Narrowboat and bridge\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The towpath was very muddy in places and nicely churned up by bicycles.\u00a0 I had to step, and sometimes leap, over large puddles along the way.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lunchtime \" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-HwUfB0Ekark\/URKzRa0ishI\/AAAAAAAAAXE\/nnvfarhFFQA\/s512\/DSCN2127.JPG\" alt=\"Lunchtime \" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lunchtime<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Locks gates act as handy benches for lunchtime feasts.\u00a0 I devoured a delicious Cornish pastie (made by my local butcher) and wolfed down a tub of bombay mix and nuts.\u00a0 The tea I had made at home some four hours previously was still hot and very refreshing.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Canal dinosaur\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-50YrvQWY330\/URKzVnj4FMI\/AAAAAAAAAXU\/JcKWbOXJQ0E\/s512\/DSCN2129.JPG\" alt=\"Canal dinosaur\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canal dinosaur<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A nearby dinosaur kept a watch on me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Moored narrowboats\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-M-u92x-7eno\/URKzXrDrC-I\/AAAAAAAAAXc\/OAUedkg7OHM\/s640\/DSCN2130.JPG\" alt=\"Moored narrowboats\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The scenery wasn&#8217;t always lovely and this wasn&#8217;t helped by the grey day and the sound of cars speeding up and down the A41.\u00a0 But at times the views were beautiful, breathtakingly so in places.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Towpath swans\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-2i7yWorDTYE\/URKzbms_87I\/AAAAAAAAAXs\/lZ3kVhCB41k\/s640\/DSCN2133.JPG\" alt=\"Towpath swans\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Port of Berkhamsted\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-3A3E_KDuvDA\/URKzftIDOhI\/AAAAAAAAAX8\/Nga7hqKRUQU\/s512\/FSCN2136.JPG\" alt=\"Port of Berkhamsted\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Port of Berkhamsted<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I reached Berkhamsted at around 4pm, leaving me an hour to trudge the final 3 miles to Tring.\u00a0 It was a bit of a forced march in the end, I really didn&#8217;t want to end up on a very muddy towpath after dark, especially as I hadn&#8217;t thought to bring a torch (daft!).<\/p>\n<p>From what I could see in the dusk, the countryside looked a delight but I was not able to give it any proper attention.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll have to save that for the next stage, when I&#8217;ll arrive much earlier in the day and enjoy a slower hike.<\/p>\n<p>I arrived in Tring just after five and was sitting on a train heading to London 15 minutes later, by that time night had fallen.\u00a0 From Euston I headed up to north London for a couple of pints of bitter and and an excellent Thai curry.\u00a0 The perfect way to end a good day&#8217;s hiking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the\u00a0fifth\u00a0stage of the King\u2019s Cross to Birmingham expedition via the Grand Union Canal.
