{"id":1105,"date":"2012-12-08T07:42:05","date_gmt":"2012-12-08T07:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=1105"},"modified":"2016-12-02T13:30:29","modified_gmt":"2016-12-02T13:30:29","slug":"waterbeach-to-ely-via-two-fen-rivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2012\/12\/waterbeach-to-ely-via-two-fen-rivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Waterbeach to Ely via two fen rivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Winter arrived with this walk. \u00a0Beautiful blue skies with barely a cloud to be seen, cold but not\u00a0<strong><em>that<\/em><\/strong> cold, all-in-all a perfect day for a hike in the English countryside (despite what <a title=\"Wanderbust hedgehogs and why hiking in the UK winter is fab\" href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2012\/06\/wanderbust\/\">those dullards at Wonderlust magazine<\/a> might have to say about the matter.)<\/p>\n<p>Waterbeach is a village a few miles north-east of Cambridge and it was here that I began the hike.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"At Waterbeach\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-9qD-81bcV_o\/ULz2vs5vHbI\/AAAAAAAAC90\/WCjQIE3L3J0\/s640\/DSCN1962.JPG\" alt=\"At Waterbeach\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">At Waterbeach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A frosty white path took me down towards and alongside the River Cam.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Following the frost\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-P4M1gBvGiWY\/ULz283q_X8I\/AAAAAAAAC90\/kLbWCG-V5UY\/s512\/DSCN1970.JPG\" alt=\"Following the frost\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Following the frost<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldwa.org.uk\/ldp\/members\/show_path.php?path_name=Fen+Rivers+Way\">Fen Rivers Way<\/a>, a path of some 50 miles or so that starts in Cambridge where it follows the Cam until that river joins the Great Ouse. The path ends at King&#8217;s Lynn where the Ouse empties out into The Wash.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fen Rivers Way marker\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fen Rivers Way marker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The walk is an enjoyable mix of slow moving river&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Cam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8230;and\u00a0pleasant\u00a0countryside.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption the Cam\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A copse on the Cam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I spotted a few likely looking wild-camping spots as I walked. \u00a0The lack of litter along the way indicated the path isn&#8217;t greatly used, always a good sign.<\/p>\n<p>I took a break at the half way point and enjoyed sausage sarnies and some tea from my flask.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lunchbreak self portrait\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lunch break self portrait<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I met a couple of hikers also heading up to Ely. \u00a0I passed a runner (and what a place for a run!) and a few dog walkers.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly I was on the home stretch, five miles to go!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Ely bound\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Cam meets the Great Ouse at Pope&#8217;s Corner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From here onwards I had Ely Cathedral to guide me homewards<\/p>\n<figure pint at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecutterinn.co.uk\/\">Cutter Inn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ely waterfront\"
