\u2013 Stage 4: Whittlesey to Peterborough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is stage four of the\u00a0<a title=\"Hit the North!\" href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/2012\/09\/hit-the-north\/\">Hit The North expedition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I arrived in\u00a0Whittlesey and stopped off at the Sunshine Cafe for a\u00a0fortifying\u00a0fry-up.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Brunch at Cafe Sunshine, Whittlesey\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-7JWlLMiHNHQ\/UJY2_ymc3jI\/AAAAAAAAC2o\/Uvw1iVAOKTc\/s512\/IMG-20121029-00341.jpg\" alt=\"Brunch at Cafe Sunshine, Whittlesey\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brunch at Cafe Sunshine, Whittlesey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After a quick snoop around for books in the Sally Anne charity shop I headed westwards out of town. \u00a0For a while I walked along Delph Dike&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Swans on Delph Dike\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-5An4ljAMqZo\/UJY1bHl0LOI\/AAAAAAAAC2A\/JQEf5Ark_gQ\/s640\/DSCN1893.JPG\" alt=\"Swans on Delph Dike\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Swans on Delph Dike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8230;and passed by the intersection with Morton&#8217;s Leam. \u00a0The Leam, which runs all the way to Peterborough, was first cut in the 1480s, the work was funded by the bishop of Ely,\u00a0John Morton.<\/p>\n<p>Gazing down the Leam was\u00a0probably\u00a0the highlight of the walk, everything afterwards was somewhat grey and dismal.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Morton's Leam\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-g322qr558qs\/UJY1ZpGyQiI\/AAAAAAAAC2A\/rzm2niKBpko\/s512\/DSCN1901.JPG\" alt=\"Morton's Leam\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Morton&#8217;s Leam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The path took me alongside the River Nene,\u00a0unfortunately\u00a0the path also runs alongside a busy road. \u00a0The clouds were grey and turning to a threatening black towards Peterborough.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, after what seemed like miles and miles, I left the busy road and took a quiet paved path along the bank of the Nene.<\/p>\n<p>I caught sight of\u00a0Peterborough\u00a0cathedral in the distance and watched a hawk hovering over a field but these sightings were not enough to lift my fast fading spirits.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Nene\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-5sGCv5wBdDQ\/UJY1cQOEI8I\/AAAAAAAAC28\/zDgevTTQExw\/s640\/DSCN1904.JPG\" alt=\"The Nene\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Nene in a grey and dismal landscape<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Feeling fed-up and demoralised by the grey clouds, spitting rain and dull countryside I turned to my &#8216;smart&#8217; phone and on YouTube found some swinging bop by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shelly_Manne\">Shelley Manne and his Men<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shelley Manne helping out\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-4X8V0xKCORM\/UJY1YekMGVI\/AAAAAAAAC2A\/XYZBD5LCrKE\/s512\/DSCN1903.JPG\" alt=\"Shelley Manne helping out\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shelley Manne helping out<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After a few minutes the tune had loaded and suddenly the greyness abated and was\u00a0replaced\u00a0by a rainbow of lush jazz sounds. \u00a0Immediately\u00a0my mood lifted, a smile appeared on my face, a tuneless whistle leapt from my lips and the world was good once more.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1040\" height=\"780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zSwIhom2yHc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I finally began the walk into Peterborough.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bridge over the Nene, just before Peterborough\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-5mG0JRyNTfo\/UJY1eYkqX2I\/AAAAAAAAC2A\/eO29Gz3XwZw\/s640\/DSCN1906.JPG\" alt=\"Bridge over the Nene, just before Peterborough\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bridge over the Nene, just before Peterborough<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Peterborough waterfront is somewhat neglected, as if the town\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0really want it there at all, a shame really. \u00a0A few neglected boats, piles and piles of bird crap, litter and stuff. Where&#8217;s the riverside cafe? \u00a0The friendly pub? \u00a0Nothing. Nada.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving the river I headed towards the train station, stopping off at a charity shop along the way where I purchased a warm and furry &#8216;trappers&#8217; hat for my winter walking, a\u00a0bargain\u00a0at \u00a37.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Winter hat\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-Ji6VlZcxg4s\/UJY25B7MV0I\/AAAAAAAAC2o\/IuHKJKXrsDY\/s512\/IMG-20121029-00348.jpg\" alt=\"Winter hat\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winter hat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the train home I chatted to a five year old boy about Thomas the Tank engine.<\/p>\n<p>This was not a particularly enjoyable walk, not helped by the horrible weather. \u00a0The highlights were the fry-up in the Sunshine Cafe, Morton&#8217;s Leam, jazz on the Nene and the winter hat.<\/p>\n<p>Now I&#8217;ve arrived at Peterborough the fenland stage of this heroic expedition is just about over and\u00a0Lincolnshire\u00a0beckons!<\/p>\n<p>Next stop is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stamford.co.uk\/\">Stamford<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is stage four of the\u00a0Hit The North expedition.
