{"id":101,"date":"2011-12-30T17:42:21","date_gmt":"2011-12-30T17:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=101"},"modified":"2016-11-29T21:55:42","modified_gmt":"2016-11-29T21:55:42","slug":"the-grand-norfolk-hike-kings-lynn-to-heacham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/2011\/12\/the-grand-norfolk-hike-kings-lynn-to-heacham\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand Norfolk Hike stage 1: King&#8217;s Lynn to Heacham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I walked this, the very first stage of my <a title=\"More info on the hike\" href=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/?p=78\">Grand Norfolk Hike<\/a>, on 17 December 2011.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104\" style=\"width: 727px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-104\" title=\"King's Lynn to Heacham\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/lunapic_132526437271071_1.gif\" alt=\"King's Lynn to Heacham\" width=\"727\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/lunapic_132526437271071_1.gif 727w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/lunapic_132526437271071_1-300x201.gif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">King&#8217;s Lynn to Heacham<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I caught the train from Ely and supped a coffee while watching the Fens pass by. \u00a0I took my camera out for an inspection only to find the damn thing wasn&#8217;t working, pah!<\/p>\n<p>I arrived at King&#8217;s Lynn station at 9.30am and began the walk north out of town. \u00a0It was raining a little but nothing\u00a0problematic. \u00a0On the way out of town I saw a Sparrow Hawk with another bird tightly held in it&#8217;s talons, the hawk glanced at me before flying off.<\/p>\n<p>I had wanted to walk up the Great Ouse to the Wash itself but there is no right of away along the coastline until Snettisham. \u00a0This meant I&#8217;d have to walk across land as far as Derslingham before taking a left turn (north) down to the sea front.<\/p>\n<p>The walk to Derslingham wasn&#8217;t particularly interesting apart from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.castlerising.co.uk\/\">Castle Rising<\/a> where I stopped to look at the castle and a enjoyed a good chat with the guy in the tourist info office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It would be great to come back one day and take a proper look around the castle, it&#8217;s pretty impressive<\/p>\n<figure class=\"mt-insert\"><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_6037\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6037\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6037 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/castle-rising.jpg\" alt=\"Castle Rising\" width=\"1000\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/castle-rising.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/castle-rising-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/castle-rising-768x458.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6037\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Castle Rising &#8211; photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/john_fielding\/9035459995\" target=\"_blank\">John Fielding<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I passed through the woods of Sandringham and finally arrived at Derslingham at about 1.30pm where I quickly ate my wonderful Cornish Pastie purchased the day before from an\u00a0excellent\u00a0local butcher in Ely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I eventually found the track down to the coast and 50 mintues later arrived at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/reserves\/guide\/s\/snettisham\/\">Snettisham Bird Reserve<\/a> and the Wash.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was beautiful. \u00a0The sun was slowly sinking into the west, I gulped down the good sea air and felt incredibly happy just to be there, on the beach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">By this time I was feeling pretty\u00a0knackered but I needed to walk a further 2 and half miles to get to Heacham before the sun set. \u00a0Luckily the beautiful surroundings lightened my spirit and was able to walk briskly to my destination, arriving in Heacham in near darkness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I found the bus stop back to King&#8217;s Lynn, the next one was in 45 minutes which gave me ample time to visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Fox-Hounds-Heacham\/64438071329\">Fox and Hounds<\/a> pub. \u00a0The Fox is a friendly, unspoilt pub which runs its very own micro-brewery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108 size-full\" title=\"Heacham Fox and Hounds\" src=\"http:\/\/martinblack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Heacham-Fox-Hounds-1px.jpg\" alt=\"Heacham Fox and Hounds\" width=\"350\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Heacham-Fox-Hounds-1px.jpg 350w, https:\/\/martinblack.com\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Heacham-Fox-Hounds-1px-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I enjoyed a pint of &#8216;Red Knicker&#8217;
