Icknield Way logoThe  Icknield Way Path runs 110 miles from  Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire, to Knettishall Heath in Suffolk.

Rather confusingly, the path is also a section of the longer Icknield Way that is made up of four paths, stretching from the north Norfolk coast to Wiltshire, more on all that another time.

I had intended to walk the entire path over five or six days or so but it’s become evident that that is just not going to happen any time soon. So I’ve decided to walk it in stages, which is quite handy as much of the path is within easy reach of train stations.

So, ideally I’d start at the start and end at the end but this isn’t convenient just now so I’m starting in the middle and heading east.

  1. It’s a superb trail, aside from the bit through Luton (shudders).
It’s also slightly odd as you come across signs for other Icknield Ways; for instance the horse riding route and surrounding roads. This caused me to go wrong once or twice.

Oh, and if you want a wildcamp, camping beside the fence of Whipsnade Zoo was perhaps the oddest I have ever done.

    1. I LOVE the idea of wild camping beside Whipsnade Zoo, it would be wonderful to hear the wolves howling at night!

      1. It’s not so much wolves, as everything else. There’d be silence for a couple of hours, then one animal would start up, followed by others, both distant and near. I’ve got a fairly vivid imagination, and the knowledge that there were three or four fences between me and the animals didn’t really help…

  2. Looks and sounds like a great walk. Hopefully by the time you’ve seen this you will have completed your first stage. Here’s to great weather! Looking forward to the post hike report.
